A study by SWI Human Resources from Hamburg surveyed more than 300 law firms in Germany on their workplace culture. Five areas were evaluated: work environment/digitalization, career development, remote work, family friendliness, and corporate and leadership culture. 65 firms reached the minimum score of 70 and were recognized.
Corporate Culture Beats Benefits
It is not perks alone that make the difference, but career opportunities, trust, and genuine creative freedom. Successful firms avoid rigid remote work quotas and overtime policies, granting their teams wide-ranging flexibility – including with regard to each individual's personal circumstances.
Family Friendliness as a Competitive Advantage
Flexible working models and mobile working pay off – including when it comes to attracting talent. The article notes, however, that only one in seven firms actively uses the promotion of diversity and equality as a recruiting tool – despite a gender pay gap of around 23% between male and female lawyers.
AI as a Strategic Response to the Skilled Labor Shortage
69% of the firms surveyed consider AI important for their future viability, and only 18% see its implementation as a major challenge – significantly fewer than in other industries. Competitive pressure is seen as the primary driver. Forward-thinking firms are first training their leadership teams and then planning comprehensive learning concepts for all employees – with the goal of not merely operating tools, but understanding and shaping the AI-driven transformation of entire fields of work.
Study Methodology
The evaluation covers five areas: "Work Environment/Digitalization," "Career Development," "Remote Work," "Family Friendliness," and "Corporate and Leadership Culture." Firms that achieved a minimum of 70 points were recognized. This was accomplished by 65 of the more than 300 participating firms.
